Getting the Big Picture on a Big Wall
"Science is essential reading on the way to the top. I read it everywhere. It takes several days to reach the top in big wall climbing, so you can only carry up the bare essentials. When you calculate the information content to weight ratio, is there any more concentrated reading source than Science? Here my son, Dylan, and I are 1500 feet up a big wall in Yosemite Valley, where we have brought our own horizontal surface (a portaledge) for sleeping and reading. An exciting view, good reading, and no phones!
The photo is of my son, Dylan Fields, reading Science, which was taken on an ascent of the southwest face of Washington Column in Yosemite Valley . Dylan is an undergraduate student at the University of Oregon , Eugene."
