INTERNATIONAL ANNIVERSARY
Dear AAAS Member,
During the last decade, AAAS has become increasingly international in focus and character. The Science International office in Cambridge, U.K., celebrated its tenth anniversary on 13 June. Since opening this office, part of a larger plan to increase our international coverage, the number of research articles by non-U.S. scientists published in Science has increased from 15 percent to nearly 40 percent of the total. The Cambridge team plays a vital role in extending the reach of the journal and AAAS. Look for coverage of this event in the 27 June News & Notes.
Keeping AAAS members up-to-date on this event and other national and international events, issues, and resources is the goal of our monthly online newsletter. Please tell us how we might make AAAS Advances more useful to you by responding to the member survey using the Voice Your Opinion link below. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Alan I. Leshner, CEO, AAAS
Please give us your thoughts and opinions about AAAS Advances. The first 50 people to respond to our member survey will receive a free AAAS gift.
Public Awareness Campaign Launch
"Science. It's Everywhere" is the theme of the AAAS multimedia initiative
to help parents enhance their children's science learning. Read about the
campaign's focus on minority families, including promotional events in
five diverse U.S. cities and a series of Public Service Announcements in
English and Spanish produced by AAAS and endorsed by the Ad Council:

Members Contribute to Scientific Advances
Generous members and friends are contributing in unprecedented numbers to
the AAAS Fund for Excellence, increasing unrestricted giving by 146
percent in the past three years. The William T. Golden Endowment Fund for
Program Innovation is now being established with the largest single
donation ever received from an individual -- a $5.25 million gift from the
treasurer-emeritus of AAAS. Read about other recent donors:

The Rescue of Human Rights Data
The offices of human rights organizations in Guatemala have been invaded
recently by thieves who steal computers containing science-based evidence
key to prosecutions for killings and torture during the country's 1960 to
1996 civil war. Read how the new AAAS data-protection project, which
provided the technical assistance of our human rights staff, guards this
valuable information against such events:

Previous Winner Underwrites Award
For the next three years, Affymetrix, Inc., of Santa Clara, CA will help
underwrite the costs associated with AAAS's venerable Newcomb Cleveland
Prize. In 1992, the prize was won by its founder Stephen P.A. Fodor as the
lead author of a paper on microarray technology. Read more:
http://www.aaas.org/news/releases/2003/0529affy.shtml. Nominations for
this year's award are due 30 June. Readers of Science are invited to
nominate papers published during the past year:
