Message to Members:
SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS

Dear AAAS Member,

AAAS has spent a busy summer advancing the role of science to meet society's ever increasing demands for innovations to benefit all people.

To foster primary education in science, AAAS sponsors DC ACTS, a series of summer institutes for Washington, DC public school teachers. Read about this fascinating program: http://www.aaas.org/news/releases/2003/0807teach.shtml. To promote science in the public interest, AAAS co-sponsored "Neuroscience and the Law," a two-day workshop on 12-13 September. Read about the ethical and social issues: http://www.aaas.org/spp/sfrl/projects/.

To provide an opportunity to learn how science is used in the world of policy making, while allowing scientists and engineers to contribute to the more effective use of technical knowledge in the making of policy, AAAS formed the Science and Technology Policy Fellowship Program. This month, the program celebrates its 30th year. To advance the careers of science and engineering students with disabilities, AAAS created the Entry Point! internship program, now in its seventh year. Read more about both of these initiatives in News to Note, below.

Vital programs such as these would not be possible without the support of our members. Thank you for your help in advancing science and serving society.

Sincerely,
Alan I. Leshner, CEO, AAAS

P.S. Congratulations to Science's Signal Transduction Knowledge Environment (STKE) on reaching yet another milestone for AAAS. View the 200th issue of STKE on 16 September.
