Message to Members:
A NEW YEAR OF ADVANCES

Dear AAAS Member,

Welcome to a new year of advancing science and serving society.

The theme of our Annual Meeting, Science at the Leading Edge, sets the tone for 2004. During the year, we'll continue to move AAAS forward, unveiling important new initiatives at the leading edge of science policy, science education, and international cooperation. We'll continue to keep members at the leading edge of scientific discovery, with the publication of breakthrough research and the presentation of groundbreaking seminars and symposia. And we'll broaden our effort to advance the excitement of science in everyday life among the general public.

Join me in welcoming our new AAAS president, Shirley Ann Jackson, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and AAAS Fellow, during the Annual Meeting, 12-16 February in Seattle, Washington. I look forward to seeing you there as, together, we embark on a new year of scientific advances.

Sincerely,
Alan I. Leshner, CEO, AAAS

P.S. The registration deadline for the AAAS Annual Meeting is extended to 23 January. For complete information on leading edge scientific seminars, career opportunities, teacher and student opportunities, family science days and more, visit www.aaasmeeting.org.

NEWS TO NOTE

EurekAlert! Top Ten Stories of 2003
What single story on the popular science news website for reporters and the public drew more than 40,000 readers? A rare bit of good news about the ozone layer was the winner. Read about the other nine top stories published on this free service of AAAS, which posts breaking research news from some 500 organizations, archives 40,000 news stories, and attracts a quarter million visitors each month: http://www.eurekalert.org/topten.

Kudos for Science Reporters
The 2003 AAAS Science Journalism Awards cited articles about Antarctica, SARS, gravity waves, and the impact of politics on science research among the awards. Read about the ultimate achievement in scientific reporting by six reporters from large and smaller circulation newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and online media: http://www.aaas.org/news/releases/2003/1125sja.shtml.

Waving the Banner of Science
The AAAS headquarters building in Washington, D.C. is festooned with two large banners proclaiming: "Science. It's all around us. Discover it together." The U.S. National Public Radio (NPR) airwaves are alive with sponsorship messages, also heard internationally through several broadcast services, emphasizing the importance of science in everyday life. The Annual Meeting in Seattle will highlight Family Science Days on 14 and 15 February, a new two-day event featuring kid-friendly science demonstrations. AAAS is broadening the reach of science and spreading the excitement of discovery among families, children, teachers, and the public.
